Long before a tattoo artist picks out a tattoo ink set, tattooing needles or a tattoo machine, a client must decide where to get a new piece of art. Some of the most popular tattoos include:

1) Lower back tattoos: Many women, especially, like to have their lower back tattooed. This area can be hidden up at the office and then made visible on the beach or in the bedroom. Several celebrities have lower back tattoos. Jessica Alba, for example, has a bow tattooed on her lower back.

2) Foot and ankle tattoo equipment: Like lower back tattoos, these are especially popular with women, perhaps because they can covered up and then showed off with a pair of strappy sandals. Several models, including Stephanie Seymour, have ankle and foot tattoos.

3) Wrist tattoos: These can also be hidden under a watch or wristband or flaunted. Several celebrities have tattoos on the inside of their wrists.

4) Back tattoos: Serious tattoo enthusiasts often get back tattoos, especially since the back is a large, flat surface – the perfect canvas for tattoo inks and for large, intricate designs. LeBron James and several other athletes have large back tattoos.

5) Armband tattoos: These wrap around the upper arm, often in a tribal design or pattern. Rapper Eminem has armband tattoos.

6) Chest tattoos: Many men get chest tattoos to emphasize pecs. These tattoos also have the advantage of being covered up by clothes in the workplace. Lenny Kravitz is one celebrity with a passion for chest tattoos. Women are not left behind, either, with some female celebrities getting breast tattoos. Rapper Eve, for example, has a breast tattoo.

7) Arm tattoos: Arm tattoos are the traditional spot for tattoos and the arm was a popular site for tattoos, even before tattoos became more popular in the 1970s and beyond. Celebrities such as Amy Winehouse have gotten this type of tattoo.

Private tattoos: Some tattoos are in intimate spots and so are only intended for a lover’s eyes. These tattoos are below the bikini line and are the most discreet place to get a tattoo.

9) Neck tattoos: Once considered extreme, neck tattoos are now becoming more mainstream. Robbie Williams and other celebrities have embraced the neck tattoo.

When selecting the right area for a tattoo, it is important to consider pain threshold and the final look of the tattoo. Some areas of the body – such as the bottom of the feet – have so much pressure on them that this can affect the tattoo ink over time. As well, clients need to consider whether they want their tattoo ink art to be visible or easy to cover up.
